THE Prince of Wales is to visit Ysgol San Sior, the environmentally inspirational school at the base of the Great Orme.

The Prince was invited by the school's headmaster Ian Keith Jones earlier this year during a lunch in Clarence House.

Prince Charles will arrive at the school on Friday July 6.

Under Mr Jones's headship, the school has established itself as a ground breaker in stimulating children’s interest in the natural world.

It has built up a flock of 150 chicken, 10 beehives and has a menagerie with a range of exotic lizards, chameleons, frogs and other creatures from around the world.

Mr Jones explained the idea for the visit came during the private lunch with Prince Charles.

He said: “Last year we won a green ambassador’s award from the World Wildlife Fund and his Royal Highness is the President of the World Wildlife Fund. As a result I was invited to a private lunch at Clarence House to talk about the school and how we keep bees.

“While I was there he asked for a box of our eggs, so I sent him a box of our eggs. He sent a letter in return thanking me for the eggs and sent us a pot of his honey. In his letter, he said he would love to visit the school.”

Mr Jones added: “We didn’t really think much about it. Then a few weeks later I had a phone call to say he really would like to visit the school. When he comes we will show him everything we are doing.

“We will be taking him to see our menagerie, we have lizards, bull frogs, tree frogs and chameleons. He will see our flock of 150 chickens, which produced 20,000 eggs last year. We are the only school in the UK registered to sell eggs to retail establishments.

“Then we will show him our pheasants, whose eggs we sell on eBay, before taking him to see the bees, he is very passionate about bees and bee keeping.”

Mr Jones said: “We carried out a survey to find out whether the parents of our children preferred his honey or ours. We probably won’t disclose the results of that investigation to his Royal Highness.

“He will also see a moth trap, we set one every evening so the children can see the different types of moths which have been caught. To date we’ve caught 50 species since April 20.

“Then he will see the children pond dipping and they will show him all the wildlife on our ponds.

“Hopefully he will have as an inspirational day as the children will.”

An official announcement from Clarence House said: "The Prince of Wales will visit Ysgol San Siôr primary school where he will meet pupils and learn about the school's proactive environmental programme. HRH will tour the garden visiting the many animals kept there including chickens and golden Pheasants."
