Choosing the design for the new Colwyn Bay kiosk was a no brainer.

Having lived in Rhos-on-Sea for 30 years, Nichola Hilton knew exactly what the promenade needed when she was chosen to come up with a design for the kiosk as an assignment in her second year studying BSc (hons) Architectural Design Technology at Glyndŵr University.

Her final product was so good the Waterfront Projects team didn’t even call on a professional architect to come up with the concept designs.

Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project manager, Benjamin Poulton said: “The standard of the fully developed designs was incredible.

“So much so in fact that the three best designs were put to the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project Board, where it was decided that the design of Nichola Hilton’s was so exceptional it negated the need for a professional architect to be procured to provide a concept design we’d just build hers.”

The former St Joseph’s Primary, Eirias High and Llandrillo College student, said coming up with the idea was simple, she just thought of what her and her family would want to see on the beach front.

She said: “The idea for my design simply came from what I would want to see and enjoy with my family on the promenade; a place to relax and appreciate the stunning views.

“The news that my design had been chosen to be built was astonishing!

“It was not only an amazing achievement whilst still studying, but also an absolute honour to have my very own design in such a high-profile location in my home town.

“Whilst drawing the design I had envisioned how I would feel to stand underneath the shelter and see the views of Colwyn Bay coast, I was not disappointed.”

The design was nominated for the People Development Award at the Construction Excellence in Wales (CEW) Awards 2018.
