A GAS leak has led to a road closure.

Engineers are currently dealing with the incident on Llanelian Road, Old Colwyn.

Risk to the public is said to be "minimal".

Steve Watts, Wales & West Utilities Area Business Manager for North Wales said: "We were alerted to reports of a smell of gas in the Llanelian Road area of Old Colwyn this afternoon (September 25) and immediately sent an engineer to the scene.

"On arrival, we found a leak on a gas pipe running beneath Llanelian Road and are now working to repair it.

"To keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, Dolwen Road has been closed at its junction with Llanelian Road. A diversion route will be clearly signposted.

“This is a complex job and we do not yet know how long our work will take. Our engineers will be working around the clock to resolve this issue as safely and as quickly as possible.

“We appreciate that working on roads such as this is not ideal, but it is important that we fix this leak now, in order to continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses.

“We will keep local people updated on the progress of our work.”

A North Wales Police spokesperson added: "We were called at 1.53pm. Our presence there is just to provide assistance.

"The gasboard is there. There has been no evacuation."

The public have been asked to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
