Monthly waste bin collections have been rubbished by residents after the new scheme began last week.

Already people from across the county have been expressing their disgust at the change from three weekly collections to four.

Tax payers have taken to social media slamming the introduction of the four weekly collection.

Phil Thorne, on the Pioneer Faccebok page, said: "Disgusting! Why pay more council tax and get less? How much do they save?"

Bridget Madigan said: "We have been in the trial area for this for two years and its been a real struggle.

"Five of us in the household and pets, we've had to stand in the bin to squash it down and that's with recycling everything that can be recycled."

Tony Lewis said: "Vermin and insect infestation are now on the rise due to the short-sighted false economy of the council.

"The private sector comprises now in control of our refuse collection making maximum profit for minimum outlay."

But the Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) cabinet is fighting back against this anger and disgust.

Councillor Louise Emery, cabinet member for economic development, said while change wasn't easy it hasn't been made any better by flase claims being made by residents.

She said is was now up to residents to take on the "black bin challenge" and recycle as much as possible.

Cllr Emery said: "We accept that change is never easy and we must all recycle more, especially food waste.

"I also want to de-bunk a few myths.Your black bin will not attract vermin, as all your food waste will be collected every week in a sealed container.

"You can put black plastic trays and yogurt pots in your recycle bin. You don’t have to clean everything out, just a rinse will do.

"You can get extra containers. As a family of five, my plastic box section does fills up every week so I have the old white bag to use for anything extra.

"You can leave bulky cardboard by the side of your recycle box and it will be taken away weekly."

However residents are still not convinced.

Dean Mahon said: "I now have a bin that is full with a further two weeks until it is collected - the council's solution: take it to the household waste centre.

"So let me get this straight, I'll put excess rubbish in my car in order for me to do the job we pay the council to do. And when I get to the the tip I will be charged to dump certain items there too.

"The irony is not lost on me that council tax is going up, the roads are in general disrepair, play parks are being shut or left in disrepair, we now have monthly bin collections and yet CCBC are building new offices.

"It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic."

Conwy town councillor Gary Willets said CCBC have a statutory requirement to collect waste from bins that are overflowing.

He said if the overflowing waste isn't collected residents can contact private companies, get them to take away the rubbish then send the bill to CCBC to pay.

In a letter to the Pioneer he said: "If the Council fails to carry out its statutory duty, to remove the domestic waste free of charge then it is considered that they are probably in breach of their statutory duty.

"The council tax payer may then wish to arrange to have the domestic waste removed by a private contractor to which the account could be forwarded to the public body for payment.

"The public body in failing to empty full domestic bins, could well be in breach of its statutory obligations.

The recovery of any costs incurred, would be open to the council tax payer pursuing the matter in the small claims court."
