The world’s top shore anglers have converged on the Conwy county for the 35th World Shore Angling Championship.

Anglers from all over the world have been competing at various locations across the county - including Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Rhos-on-Sea, Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan - throughout the week in a race for the championship title.

Countries competing include Wales, Scotland, Spain, Italy, Spain, Paraguay and Greece.

The event started on Saturday with a medieval torch parade through the streets of Conwy before the action started on Sunday.

The World Shore Angling Championships is an annual event hosted by nations associated with FIPS-Mer - the World Governing Body for competitive sea angling

Predominantly, teams of seven, made up of five anglers, one reserve angler, and one team captain are selected by their host nation to represent that country and compete as part of the World Championships.

They fish from the shoreline, over five competition days, on a catch and release basis.

The event will conclude on Saturday with a closing ceremony, dinner and awards presentation.

As part of the championships, staff from Anglesey Sea Zoo have been on the Llandudno promenade - opposite Venue Cymru - for four hours (2pm-6pm) each day.

However, today will be their final day in Llandudno. , Monday to Thursday, 22-25 October.

Whole the event was taking place, the Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers and Conwy County Borough Council thought this to be a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of what’s on our shores and in our seas.

Frankie Hobro, owner and director of Anglesey Sea Zoo, said: “We’re very excited about being involved with this championship, promoting British marine life is what we’re about, and fishing of this kind, catch and release, is very sustainable.

“It’s a great opportunity for both visitors and locals to learn more about our British marine life. Educating people about which species they can eat, what they may have already eaten, what the fish look like and how big they grow.

“We’re looking forward to seeing lots of people, who will hopefully leave us with much more knowledge about our wonderful North Wales coast.”
