A NEW wine bar is getting ready to open its doors.

Sheldon's, located on Penrhyn Road in Colwyn Bay, is set to open officially on Friday, November 2 although a 'soft' opening night is planned for tonight (Saturday). About 20 jobs will be created.

The Pioneer were invited for a first 'sneak peak'. The wine bar will serve a range of quality wines as well as cocktails, craft beers, real ales and soft drinks.

Behind the new venture are two couples; Kate Roberts and her husband Julian and Lorna Hughes with her husband Jonathan.

The long-standing friends, all aged in their 40s, decided that it was time Colwyn Bay had an upmarket wine, cocktail and craft beer bar to reflect the change the town is now experiencing.

The venue will be able to accommodate up to 120 people.

Kate, a mum to three children - including identical twins - said: "Being local to Colwyn Bay, the team behind Sheldon's have all seen a once vibrant town go through a long period of decline. However, the focus is now back on Colwyn Bay with the opening of the new council building and the 700 plus jobs that this will bring to the town.

"Sheldon's is best remembered as a stationary shop. However, this isn't how it started.

"Originally, the premises was used as a print works called Tompkinsons.

"When we started on the renovation, we discovered three eight-metre square windows that had been boarded up for the last 50 years. Based on this, we decided to change the project renovation from a modern bar to a combination of modern bar on one side and a throwback to the history of the building on the other side."

Jonathan Hughes, 45, has been involved in the food and drinks industry for about 25 years.

During that time, he has set up the Great Orme Brewery and has been part of the team that runs the Albion Ale House in Conwy and Johnny Dough’s pizza.

Kate, Julian and Lorna are new to the industry, but have a long background in business.

Kate added: "Sheldon's is more than just a wine bar, it is dedicated to delivering good quality wine, craft beers and spirits. Quality is the key.

"We are aiming for a relaxed yet professional atmosphere.

"I can't say too much about what it will look like inside as the look is a surprise, but suffice to say it won't be like anything else in Colwyn Bay and will combine heritage with modern style.

"Colwyn Bay is going through a significant change and we are confident that the town is about to regain its past glory."
