A WHEELCHAIR basketball star from Llandudno has returned home with a bronze medal from the Invictus Games in Sydney.

Ryan Hewitt helped the Great Britain team achieve a podium spot during the Games, a global competition involving wounded, injured or sick Armed Forces personnel.

As well as claiming a cherished medal, Ryan also enjoyed being in the media spotlight as he was interviewed on BBC television and talked about the enjoyment gained from playing wheelchair basketball.

Ryan served in the British Army but was injured in 2010, which led to him spending a lengthy period at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court undergoing rehabilitation.

He has hailed the benefits of having since joined a wheelchair basketball team, saying earlier this year: "It has improved my overall mental health and wellbeing."

Ryan plays for North Wales Knights, who have made a good start to the season and on Saturday will be playing home matches against New Castle and Manchester with tip-offs at 1.40pm and 3.20pm at Eirias Park Leisure Centre, Colwyn Bay.

There is free entry and free parking available for spectators.
