A NEWTOWN charity is hoping to brighten up Christmas for hundreds of families as it launched its annual appeal for food and toys.

The Salvation Army’s annual ‘Christmas Toy & Tins Appeal’ relies on the generosity of the public to donate gifts and toys for children and young people who otherwise would have little or nothing on Christmas morning.

The appeal has seen thousands of toys and gifts donated by the people of Newtown and they say hundreds of lives have been brightened in the process.

This year’s appeal will run from Wednesday, November 14, until Wednesday, December 19.

Nicola Wain, community development worker, said: “Last year we delivered 220 toy parcels and 110 food hampers to families in need. It is heart-warming to see children’s faces light up when they open their Christmas presents. If you have children, grandchildren or children you support, think of what they might like in their Christmas stocking and consider buying an extra present and donating it. We’re asking for brand new toys or gifts so the families we support feel extra special”.

After the appeal, the charity’s team of volunteers will head out to deliver Christmas gifts to those who might otherwise go without.

Salvation Army Territorial Envoy Sam Jones added: “During the festive season, when many are enjoying celebrations with friends and family, others are struggling to make ends meet, often through no fault of their own.

“Last year we met people who were struggling following work place accidents, recent bereavement and relationship breakdowns”.

“The Christmas Story inspires us as a church to reach out to those in need, so we’re running the appeal to ensure every child gets a present and meal on Christmas Day.”

Donations of toys and food items can be delivered to the Salvation Army shop on Market Street. Local Salvation Army representatives will then distribute them to children and families in need in the area through their own networks, local groups and social services.
