THE Mayor of Llanidloes has commended the town for its “phenomenal” mark of respect on Remembrance Sunday.

Cllr Janet Crisp said it was “a day to be proud, proud of our ancestors who did their unfailing duty, proud of our past and serving Armed Forces and proud of our Town who had not forgotten the sacrifices made on their behalf.”

A lone drummer led the Remembrance Day Parade consisting of members from the Royal British Legion, Councillors, and uniformed organisations to St Idloes Church.

The Rev Linda Cowan gave a moving and poignant address about pride, duty and the horrors of war at the full capacity Service of Remembrance. Two riders whose horses wore purple poppies to commemorate the animals who died in the war joined the parade following the church service.

“It was wonderful to see the hundreds of people waiting at the Cenotaph to witness the Act of Remembrance. Wreaths were laid and a beautiful memorial metal bench made by local lads was unveiled,” Mayor Crisp said.

She also thanked the women of the Royal British Legion for their months of tireless work knitting and crocheting hundreds of poppies with the support of local businesses to turn the town red to mark the centenary of WW1.

“Poppies could be seen on lampposts, climbing up the walls of the Old Market Hall and cascading down the staircase in the Town Hall. Shop windows were dressed in red and with local war memorabilia on show.
