Obstacles could be put up on a busy high street to stop people parking on the pavement.
Residents of Mochdre have become so concerned about the nuisance of business owners parking on the pavement of Conway Road that they have sent a petition to the council asking that something be done.
People in the area which has two nearby schools said that businesses were using areas in front of their shop to park and this was forcing pedestrians to walk in the road.
Officers have told members of the economy and place scrutiny committee that much of the land in question is private property and they would need the cooperation of business owners.
They have suggested that an approach be made to ask for their cooperation and that funding may be arranged with the community council and Colwyn Bay Business Investment District (BID) to fund obstacles.
Mochdre county councillor, Adrian Tansley, said: “All of the shops have parking facilities at the back of their shops. The parking in front of the shops was never a problem historically. However, now, one shop alone has five cars outside. If the dropped kerb outside the butchers was raised, they could not drive over our pavement to get to the area.”
The petition to councillors which was presented to members of the committee in April said: “This petition is on behalf of the Mochdre residents, to stop the dangers of accidents to all pedestrians shopping and the children from the two schools dodging cars driving over the pavements to park, which is causing damage to walkways.”
The committee will meet to discuss the issue on Wednesday.
Cllr Don Milne the cabinet member for environment, roads and facilities, said: “Given that the land concerned is not adopted I fully support any attempts
to bring together the interested parties to create a solution which is
acceptable by all. Discussions with the community council over the future
of the car park should also be considered as this may result in a better long
term solution for the community.”
