LLANDUDNO Lions club has honoured five local people with a special award for their unselfish contribution to the community.

The awards mark the Lions Club International Centennial celebrations. The awards were presented at an event at St George’s Hotel, Llandudno.

First Vice District Governor, Lion John Chambers, said: “These awards recognise those people who are not Lions but give their time unselfishly to help others in our community.”

The presentations were made by the Mayor of Llandudno, cllr David Hawkins, and Lion President Graham Shimmin.

The award recipients were: Teresa Evans, Clare Forrester, Diane Salisbury, Les Smith and Billy Baxter.

The citations stated: Teresa Evans is a person who has helped people change their lives and made life better by their involvement in the community through supporting groups and individuals and our forces, especially at this time of year with the with boxes for our troops abroad through the Welly appeal.

Clare Forrester volunteers for nearly every event we hold, she comes along either in her official capacity or just to shake a bucket and not just the Lions but also for many other organisations. Her main passion is St John’s Ambulance.

Diane Salisbury volunteers for everything: coffee morning’s, jumble sales and collecting in all weathers. She puts many of us to shame with her will, wit and determination.

Les Smith has spent many years helping others and with all sorts of events in the town, and has appeared in many guises.

Billy Baxter has overcome his disability to inspire others in many ways and does a great deal of work for the community behind the scenes. He is the Town Cryer, the only blind town cryer, and is an ambassador for the town and works tirelessly for Blind Veterans UK.
