Conwy Bowling Club are to begin work around the greens after receiving funding from the Town Council.

Conwy Town Council awarded £12,000 of community development funding for the work which will see a metal safety bar and stoppers installed around the greens.

The works are set to increase safety around the green stopping balls from coming off and also preventing visitors to Conwy from walking across the greens during matches.

Bowling Club secretary and treasurer, Terry Smith, said: "It is a very popular spot. There are a lot of people that come around the back of the castle because they say it is more photogenic from there.

"But that has caused a lot of problems for us. While a lot of clubs have enclosed greens we are open to visitors. With the tourist population coming through Conwy becoming more and more we do get people coming to the back of the club and if they are foreign visitros they don't always understand the game of bowls.

"These new railings will act as a visual deterrent."

Mr Smith said the club was hugely grateful for the funding from the town council.

He added: "There is no way we could have done this on our own so we are very grateful to the town council. It is more than what we expected."

Conwy mayor, cllr Sam Cotton, said: “It is a really important part of the the town. It is important work for a well used facility so we were very supportive of what they were planning to do.

“We were more than happy to fund their project.”

Work is set to start on the new safety railing in the coming months with the work set to be finished by the time the 2019 season starts in April.

The club boasts an ever growing membership base and already holds Welsh team matches.

Mr Smith added the increased safety would help the club maintain these events.
