Students from a Llandudno school have been left royally surprised after receiving a letter from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

In May last year, the Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn year 5 class were learning about formal letter writing and composed a letter, using their new skills, to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan congratulating them on their wedding.

The year 5 class's teacher Jessica Daniels said: “As a class, we watched clips on Newsround of the Royal Wedding shortly after the event took place last May.

“Some of the children wanted to use their newly-acquired skills to write a formal letter to the Royal couple expressing their congratulations.

“The children wrote a first draft of their letters, self-edited and then wrote a final draft letter. They placed their letters in envelopes and each wrote the address to Kensington Palace.

“All the letters were placed in a larger collective package. The children then walked to the local post office to weigh the package and post it off to Kensington Palace.

“This was back in May so we were not at all expecting a royal response.”

But Miss Daniels and her class received a pleasant surprise a few weeks ago when a letter arrived from the palace thanking all the students for their well wishes prior to the wedding.

Stephanie, who was part of the year 5 class last year – now in year 6, said: “I was over the moon when they replied a few days ago. Meghan and Harry both looked great in the photograph. I really admire them because they are both loving, kind and generous.”

Fellow classmate, Johnny, said: “I was quite excited; it’s not often that you get a letter a message from royalty.”

The letter, seen by the Pioneer, received from Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been overwhelmed by all the incredibly kind cards and letters they have received on the occasion of their Wedding, and are so touched that you took the trouble to write as you did.

“It was most thoughtful of you and greatly appreciated by their Royal Highnesses who send you their very best wishes.”

Miss Daniels said it was a “very lovely” response from the Royal Family – which included a letter and a photo from the wedding day – and one the class of 15 would remember for a long time.

The pupils have already turned their attention to the next big moment in the Duke and Duchess’ life, the arrival of the new Royal baby.

Ysgol Ffordd Dyffryn year 6 student Tia, said: “I wish them well for their new baby.”
