CONWY county could become a part of a North Wales-wide environmental enforcement scheme.

A task and finish group has been working on potential models for a environmental enforcement service in the county since Kingdom Services pulled out of the area in August.

While a final list of solutions is not set to be presented to Conwy County Borough Councillors (CCBC) until April, Denbighshire County Council’s (DCC) head for housing, regulation and the environment, Cllr Tony Thomas, said they had been in talks with Conwy and other counties about the possibility of hiring an external contractor for all counties in North Wales.

DCC is in the final stages of producing a draft agreement for an external contractor to take over the role in their county.

Assuming the draft is passed through council in the coming months, an enforcement company could be in place by the summer.

Long-term it could collaborate with other counties. Cllr Thomas said: “We have had talks with Conwy and Flintshire and are keen to keep progressing these talks over time.

“We are currently looking for a firm and going forward we are keen to collaborate with Conwy and other counties and have a uniform system across North Wales.”

But CCBC did not confirm any contact had been made with DCC.

A spokesman said: “A task and finish group was set up by the council in August 2018 to look at options for a long term solution for the issuing of fixed penalty notices (FPN) and environmental enforcement.

“The task and finish group is reviewing the different potential environmental enforcement service models and arrangements to enable the council to determine what, if any arrangements, should be put in place for environmental enforcement.”
