A Colwyn Bay woman is set to swim the equivalent of the English Channel to raise funds for Diabetes UK Cymru.

Pam Preston, 55, was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 16 years ago and is taking on the swimming challenge - Swim 22, between 22 February and 22 May.

Mrs Preston, whose mother and grandmother also had the condition, said: “It wasn’t a shock when I was diagnosed but for a few years I didn’t take my condition as seriously as I should have.

"My mother and grandmother suffered greatly with complications from Type 2 diabetes but we have so much more information available to us now.

"I have found the Diabetes UK website invaluable over the last few years.”

Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly.

People might get Type 2 diabetes because their family history, age and ethnic background puts them at increased risk. They are also more likely to get Type 2 diabetes if they are overweight.

Mrs Preston said: “I thought Swim 22 would be a great chance to give something back and get fitter in the process. I have lost four stone since last July and feel so much healthier and have more energy.

"Exercising regularly really helps me keep my blood sugars under control. I also love swimming, so I can’t wait to get started.”

There are around 191,000 people in Wales living with diabetes, the highest prevalence in the UK, and 90 per cent of those have Type 2. It is estimated that a further 60,000 people in Wales are living with Type 2 diabetes but are yet to be diagnosed.

Joseph Cuff, Fundraising Manager, Diabetes UK Cymru said: “We are delighted that Pam is making a splash for Diabetes UK Cymru, to improve her own health as well as help us support the many thousands of people across Wales who are living with diabetes.

“Swim 22 is perfect if you want to challenge yourself to get fitter at your own pace and in your own time.

"You can swim in your local pool alone or, better still, get your family, friends and colleagues involved.

"You can even split the 22 miles between a team to make it easier for everyone. Our dedicated team will be on hand to support you from start to finish."
