CHIMPS at a Colwyn Bay zoo have been enjoying regular mugs of hot juice and warm jacket potatoes during the cold snap.

The Welsh Mountain Zoo was closed on Friday due to snow and ice.

Furry friends at the zoo, who have both indoor and outdoor enclosures so are free to make their own choices, have been finding ways to keep warm but extra support is being given in the form of the hot drinks, food and even roasted chestnuts.

Michelle Pywell, head keeper, said: “Ultimately, not all of our animals are from naturally cool habitats. Some of the animal will spend more time indoors, so we give them extra enrichment to keep them busy and active.

"During this time of the year, the chimps love slurping their warm drinks and chomping on their baked potatoes.

"We constantly monitoring the animal’s behaviour and temperature and offer any added support that we think necessary throughout the year when faced with any type of extreme weather."
