A SIGHTING of a person in the water which triggered a coastguard response turned out to be a sea buoy.
Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked by National Maritime Operations Centre at 9.56am to investigate a possible sighting of a person in the water near to Chesil Cove.
It comes after a member of the public dialed 999 this morning.
A coastguard spokesman said: βOn arrival the team met with the first informant who pointed to the possible casualty, on closer inspection through binoculars, it was found to be a marker buoy with seaweed attached. The first informant was thanked for their concern. The team then stood down and returned to station.
"Remember if you see anything untoward in the sea, dial 999 ask for Coastguard.β
