Old Colwyn's Margaret Williams may be 80 but this hasn't deterred her from signing up for her 15th London Marathon.

She will be taking on the UK's biggest marathon next month set to tear up the streets of London all in the name of charity.

Having run for other charities previously including Leukaemia research, Barnardo’s, MS research and the Stroke Unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd this time she will be running in support of Llandudno-based St David’s Hospice.

Mrs Williams has a strong understanding of the services provided by St David’s. She has seen first-hand the impact of its care on local patients and their family particularly when her husband Norman received care at the Hospice Day Therapy Centre in 2010.

Mrs Williams, who is retired, said: “When my husband was there, the staff were friendly and I want to help maintain that fantastic standard of care.

“This is my 15th London Marathon, despite that I still absolutely love it. There’s so much to see and hear.

“I didn’t start running until I was 47 because I felt unfit. I just turn up, do the best I can and enjoy it.”

Her personal best for the London Marathon is a very respectable 4hours 7minutes, one year she even beat her daughter when running the race.

Hospice Community Fundraiser, James Wilde said: “Margaret’s story shows that age or fitness aren’t barriers to doing something great if you’re determined enough to take on the challenge.

“I know Margaret has been training hard, by taking on events such as the Conwy Half Marathon and I look forward to seeing how she gets on this April.”

Mrs Williams has been running for 33 years and took part in her first London Marathon when she was 50.

She said she kept coming back to the London Marathon because she enjoyed raising money for good causes and the popularity of this race meant it was easier to convince people to donate.

She added: "The London Marathon is iconic and really well known, if you want people to donate it tends to be easier because they have heard of the London Marathon."
