A 19-year-old who’d only passed his test the day before and had a new car was caught “showing off” at more than 100mph, a court heard.

Skoda Fabia driver Finlay Wooller, a scaffolder, of Kings Road, Colwyn Bay, has been banned for 20 months and until he passes an extended test. He admitted dangerous driving.

Magistrates at Llandudno also imposed a ten weeks suspended custodial term and ordered him to do 200 hours unpaid work and pay £200 costs.

Diane Williams, prosecuting, said the teen and two other young drivers were followed by police for five miles from Mostyn Champneys retail park at Llandudno and along the A470 and A55 to Colwyn Bay on a wet night last November. They’d driven in convoy but there was tail-gating and harsh braking in a “cat and mouse game”.

Mrs Williams said they entered a 50mph limit on the A55 dual carriageway at 105mph. There was “bad” driving but the trio didn’t accept racing, she added.

VW Polo driver Zafer Ozkan, also 19, a cook, of Cae Felin, Llanrwst, and Vauxhall Astra driver Iwan Howartson, 22, of Meadow Gardens, Llandudno, a farm machinery operator, also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and the same penalties were imposed.

A probation officer said Wooller got “over-excited” after passing his test the day before. He now realised he wasn’t ready for such a powerful car and had sold it.

Defence solicitor Deborah Davies said the trio had been “incredibly foolish”.

Simon Sargent, solicitor for Ozkan, said three vehicles were overtaken and most of the driving happened on a dual carriageway.

Rebecca Boswell, defending Howartson, said he had also got rid of his car. He’d messed up the chance of starting a business.

Video footage from the police car was shown to the court.

Court chairwoman Siobhan Atkinson told the three men :”You could have caused fatal injuries to yourselves or others.”
