LLANDUDNO'S inaugural March for Veterans 10 mile challenge proved to be a huge success.

Held on Saturday, March 30, the event was organised by military charity, Blind Veterans UK, to help end isolation for blinded ex-servicemen.

Women, keen walkers and supporters of all ages and fitness levels undertook the 10 mile challenge, tackling the tough but scenic terrain, all in aid of supporting the charity and its services to veterans.

One of the participants was Mark Hollis, who along with six of his friends, completed the walk blind folded, each with a hand on the shoulder of the comrade in front.

The striking image was inspired by the statue of blinded First World War Soldiers that now stands outside Manchester Piccadilly station and unveiled by Blind Veterans UK last year.

The original sculpture that the statue is based on also stands proudly at the charity’s Llandudno centre.

Upon completing the challenge, Mark said: “I've taken part in walking Challenges before but this one really lived up to all my expectations.

“North Wales is absolutely beautiful. The walk is challenging with all its hills but it’s so worth it. I'll definitely be back again next year!

“If anyone out there thinks they can't do it - trust me - they can! It’s been a great day for a great cause.”

It is hoped March for Veterans will bring in much needed funds for the charity as they continue helping blind veterans achieve victory over blindness.

Regional fundraiser, Victoria beech who was instrumental in organising the event said: “It’s been a fantastic day with support from so many people. We are absolutely delighted with the response from the local community.

“We’re really hoping that we’ll be able to smash our target. We’d like to thank everyone who took part today for the wonderful support. It was obvious that participants enjoyed the challenge.

“It is heart-warming to see a community come together like this to support a service that is making a real difference to so many right on our doorsteps. Thank you everyone – and we look forward to seeing you again next year!”
