COLWYN Bay zoo's double-humped resident has turned one.

Sparky, a female Bactrian camel, was treated to some special birthday treats including a cake made from browse.

Born to mum and dad, Clara and Genghis, Sparky has flourished since being born at the zoo and has shot up in height.

Kim Wood, director of Living Collections at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, said: “Sparky is a fantastic Zoo resident and certainly lives up to her name. Wild Bactrian camels are highly endangered and ongoing conservation efforts are critical to ensure their survival.

"Any birthday is important but this is a big birthday for her which we’ll be sure to celebrate - Happy Birthday Sparky.”

With only 1000 wild Bactrian camels, preservation of this species, native to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and in the Gashun Gobi in China, is critical.

Sparky is the fifth Bactrian camel to be born on the zoo.

They are recognised by the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN) as highly endangered.

With numbers decreasing each year due to fragile habitat, an application has been made to have the Bactrian Camel listed as critically endangered.
