A DEDICATED 50-strong group of model boat-enthusiasts have been busy keeping Eirias Park Lake looking tidy.

Members of the Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club meet on a weekly basis to carry out maintenance work on the site, including cutting and removing weeds.

The Club itself has been running since around the 1940's, under various names. The group in its current form was set up in the 1970's.

Secretary Allan Woodward has been a member of the Model Boat Club for over a decade now.

The 73-year-old, who lives in Kinmel Bay, said: "The boats we use are mostly made from the kits that our 50 members provide.

"The nearest Boat Club to this area aside from us is based in Ellesmere Port, so we have people coming from all over the place. Some of our members are from Holyhead and others are from mid-Wales and England."

North Wales Pioneer:

The group meets at the lake every Sunday morning and have recently purchased over £3,000 worth of equipment to help them with their maintenance work.

"Overall, we'll end up spending around 30 to 40 sessions a year on making sure the Lake looks good and is suitable for us to use for us to sail our model boats on," Mr Woodward added.

"We make sure that the weeds stay at least 60cm below the surface. We'll be continuing to tackle them up until September"

Mr Woodward says that members of the club have also been given water safety training and take to the lake on a "commercial weed cutter" boat which cannot be capsized, to ensure that work is completed in a risk-free manner.

He added that the Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club is always looking for new members to join their sessions. For more information, visit the club's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/colwynbaymodelboatclub/
