A North Wales college group has teamed up with one of the world’s most prestigious and successful gaming brands to help develop the next generation of digital innovators.

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is now part of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s global academic programme - PlayStation®First. Run by Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE), it provides access to professional development hardware and software tools for both staff and students.

This means that students get to use the same hardware that games studios around the world are using, thus enabling them to create ground-breaking, innovative games on PlayStation…in their own classrooms!

This follows on from the recent announcement that Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has been registered as both Xbox and Nintendo developers.

PlayStation®First establishes partnerships with “pioneers at the cutting edge of innovation, development and research”, so the college is “thoroughly delighted” to have been accepted onto the programme. The college is aiming to be the second UK institution to release a product on the PlayStation®First programme, following on from the success of Sheffield Hallam University.

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is the only college in Wales – and only the second academic establishment along with the University of South Wales - to have been accepted onto Sony’s PlayStation Academic Programme. Grŵp Llandrillo Menai comprises Coleg Llandrillo, Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.

The college will now work in partnership with Sony to provide its Games Development students with the opportunities to learn the necessary skills to produce games for the PlayStation for gamers across the world to access, after being taught how to use the PlayStation developer kits, which are highly sought after within the gaming industry.

Coleg Llandrillo cComputing tutor, Rob Griffiths, said: “This is an incredible opportunity for our students to work with one of the giants of the global gaming industry. It will give them the chance to get their hands on the most popular hardware available.

"We are delighted to enter into a partnership with a world leader in games development, which will open up a myriad of opportunities for our students.”
