The community has rallied round to offer support to a forest school after it was destroyed by vandalism.

Ysgol Goedwig Nant y Glyn Forest School's base camp was targeted over the Easter break. The seating, kitchen areas and dens were torn down and burnt in a fire.

The fire damage covered about eight-feet in diameter.

Owners Delyth Harries and husband Greg Woolley, who have more than 40 years of experience of play, youth and community work in both the voluntary and statutory sector, have been left upset but vowed to rebuild.

The forest school has been going for about five years.

Delyth said since the incident, the support from the community, organisations and other professionals, had been "fantastic".

"We put our heart and souls into this and we believe in what we do. A lot of hard work has gone up in smoke," she said.

"It is upsetting. We put in a lot of time and energy. It is a magical space but we can only be positive and take it as an opportunity to rebuild.”

The forest school is located on a small hillside woodland, just outside of Colwyn Bay.

A range of activities and programmes are offered such as family fun in the forest, John Muir Award for Families, a forest school for families and childminders, outdoor learning opportunities for school and colleges, programmes for youth and community groups, team building days and public events.

Delyth added: "The school is run by myself and my husband. The focus is very much about learning and enjoying the outdoors and ensuring people are safe and managing risks safely. Not to be harmful to the environment for example, be trustworthy, responsible and grow and learn in the outdoors.

“They tore down the kitchen area, dens and seating and made a fire with it all. It could have been worse with the dry weather.

“The incident has been reported to the police. There isn’t much to clear up as nothing is left.

"We love what we do. Some people have described the site as magical.

“It highlights the need for this work, so we will rebuild and carry on. In the meantime, it’s business as usual."

In recent weeks, Delyth and Greg have worked with about 150 children and young people from schools and community groups facilitating den building and learning about the importance of fire safety in the outdoors.
