LOYAL fans of Conwy amateur drama group CHAPS will be treated to something different next month.

In the words of writer and director Keith Wood, ‘off the wall’, ‘different’ and ‘oddball’ are all terms that could be used to describe the latest production termed 2101: a space peculiarity.

The play combines live action and pre-recorded video to provide a unique entertainment experience of comedy, music and dance.

Keith said: “I wanted to create a story which entertains, whilst delivering a serious message. The play leads the audience through a series of misunderstandings, unintended consequences and unexpected actions.”

North Wales Pioneer:

Nightclub scene (L to R): Martin Hill as Hal Melish; Jenny Phillips as Dorothy Melish; (behind) Sue Rogers as Petra Thonglady; Keith Wood as Peregrine Pansy; Geoff Skelhorn as Pete Trashend; Andrew Wood as Dick Sleepman; (behind) Patti Olvier and Jean Webb as "audience members"

The story focuses on Hal Melish, a rather unlikeable retired accountant, and his wife Dorothy, as they embark on a trip in their recreational vehicle (RV).

Hal’s stubbornness brings them into contact with breakdown recovery operative Elizabeth Trotter.

During the ensuing repairs to their RV, Hal & Dorothy visit a club which offends Hal’s morals in just about every way imaginable. Hal cannot leave quickly enough. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected aspect of Elizabeth’s character, the nature of their departure is not really what Hal and Dorothy wanted.

“Hal and Dorothy find themselves propelled into the midst of a utopian society – but Hal’s bigotry prevents him from seeing the true nature of his hosts,” Keith added.

“The audience should always expect the unexpected.”

The play includes pre-recorded video for certain parts of the story which would otherwise be difficult to represent on stage.

Keith said: “The CGI aspects of the video have taken 18 months to create. The live action and location filming were done between October last year and March this year.”

2101: a space peculiarity will be presented at the Memorial Hall, Llandudno Junction, on Saturday, June 15 at 7.30pm and Saturday, June 22 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
