CLLR Goronwy Edwards, who is in his 40th year as a Conwy town councillor, has been named as the town’s new Mayor.

He expressed a wish to strive to keep the local community a vibrant and safe place to live through preserving the past and planning for the future.

Cllr Edwards said: “I believe strongly that by working together we can achieve so much more in all that we strive to achieve. And with that in mind my theme for the year will be just that: working together with the residents of Conwy, Llandudno Junction and Deganwy.

Cllr Samantha Cotton, the outgoing mayor said: “It was a busy year for Conwy town. Last July we welcomed the 'Cyhoeddi' to Conwy, the ceremony which announced Llanrwst as the host of this summer's National Eisteddfod.

“I was also delighted to welcome the Mayor of Himeji to Conwy. We hope to twin our castles and towns and took the first step in that process by signing a Memorandum of Understanding to seal the deal.

“It is difficult to list all of the wonderful events I have attended as mayor and, I would miss one out and upset someone, however we are very lucky to live in an area where there are so many people who are committed to making Conwy and the surrounding area a lovely place to visit for tourists, putting on a variety of events which attract so many visitors and are enjoyed by local people too.

“In November I was again very proud to lead the wreath laying and Service of Remembrance in the town. I was also very proud to be allowed to wear a handmade poppy, made by the Ladies of the Llandudno Junction knitting club, which had been one of those made for the poppy wreath being laid at the Cenotaph in London as part of the People's Procession.”
