When a 38-year-old man appeared in court on Friday accused of assaulting his partner magistrates were told it was the second time it had happened in five years.

Gareth Day of Churchill Close, Old Colwyn, pleaded guilty to common assault and was placed on an 18-month community order and must attend a better relationships course and ten days of rehabilitation. He must pay £345 in a fine and costs.

Diane Williams, prosecuting at Llandudno, said it happened last month in Sefton Road, Old Colwyn, and a man had called police after seeing Day strike Faye Clegg. A probation officer told the court that Day had stated he smoked cannabis every other day.

“He is not in a relationship at present,” she added.

Defence solicitor Alex Fitzgerald said Day maintained he’d been punched in the face by the complainant but his assault was committed when he pushed her on the shoulder.
