Ian Jones, headteacher of Ysgol San Sior, said he didn’t know why he and his wife Gemma were invited, but thought it might have flowed from the visit of Prince Charles to his school last year.

He said: “Whatever the reason for the invite Gemma and I had a whale of a time, it was a once in a lifetime experience.

“I wore a waistcoat depicting a Welsh Dragon and it was great icebreaker and conversation starter.

“I hadn’t realised how big the palace was. I’m not sure if you were only meant to go to the food pavilion once, but I managed multiple visits.

“At each Garden Party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed! I was instrumental in reducing that total.”
