LLANDUDNO’s new Miss Alice has been chosen for the coming municipal year.
Millie Woodyatt was chosen in a competition open to all girls aged between eight and 10 and living in one of the five wards in the town.
There were 10 entrants this year who were judged on their appearance, communication skills, personality and knowledge of the Alice in Wonderland book. The outgoing Miss Alice, Miss Carys Lambe, congratulated Millie on her appointment and she was presented with a sash showing her title and a Miss Alice outfit.
Millie is nine years old and attends Ysgol Craig y Don. Her duties will include attendance at town council civic and guest appearances at other events. She likes netball, brownies, dancing swimming and arts and crafts. She will accompany the mayor to civic engagements and on occasion undertake visits out of the area to promote Llandudno and the Miss Alice connection.
The Miss Alice position marks the town’s connection with Charles Dodgson, better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. The family of Alice Liddell, who it is believed Charles Dodgson’s inspiration for Alice character in Alice in Wonderland, used to own a holiday home in Llandudno and it is believed that Charles Dodgson visited the family here whilst writing Alice in Wonderland.
Carys, in her final speech as Miss Alice, thanked the town council and the mayor and mayoress during her reign, David and Mandy Hawkins, for all their support through the year. She reflected on her year and all the events she attended and especially the importance of meeting War veterans and laying wreaths on behalf of the council.
Carys also thanked the Alice committee and the staff at Llandudno town council especially Louise Morris. She also announced that as a thank you for being Miss Alice she did a sponsored walk around the Great Orme and raiseed £193.50 for the outgoing mayor’s chosen charities, Hope Restored and Aberconwy Mind.
