The expansion of Llandudno’s museum could be about to get a cash boost.

Members of Conwy’s cabinet are set to approve £35,000 in project match funding to help improve the town’s museum and turn it into “a key all-weather heritage attraction” in the popular Victorian seaside resort.

A meeting of the cabinet on Tuesday will be told that the project needs extra cash to bridge a £300,000 gap on the £1.8 million expansion of the museum.

In 2018 the museum was awarded £862,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the planned improvements were expected to cost £1.5 million but this has increased to £1.8 million.

This has left the museum needing £35,000 from the council to carry on with work on the proposals.

The cabinet will consider a report that states: “The museum is in need of updating and expanding in order to fulfil its potential as a cultural destination of excellence and to fully realise its educational potential.

“This facility has the potential to become a key cultural hub for Llandudno, and the creation of more interactive galleries and exhibition areas will create an increase in visitor footfall, with improvements to the café, entrance, shop, and a range of access improvements.

“A further element of the project is the creation of a dedicated learning space, supporting a structured lifelong learning and education programme for participating schools, along with in-work training and apprenticeships. There will be an opportunity to increase the number of student placements and volunteers to develop their skills relating to customer service, events, research, archiving and collection care.”

Roy Haley, chair of the trust that runs the museum, said: “The museum expansion plans were drawn up some time ago, and in addition to more exhibition space, include a community facility which will provide a meeting room for local organisations as an education centre for visiting school groups, as well as improved disabled access, and a passenger lift.”

He added: “The museum project group have spent a number of years working on this and should be congratulated for their achievement to date. We really look forward to seeing this vital new addition to the town’s offer when it opens in 2020.”

Officers have recommended that members approve the funding.
