A COCKTAIL, wine bar and bistro which opened seven months ago scooped a top award at the Conwy Business Awards.

Sheldon's, on Penrhyn Road in Colwyn Bay

, was named Food and Drink Business of the Year at the event, held at Venue Cymru.

Other winners included The Rabbit Hole Café in Llandudno, who won Social Enterprise of the Year; Marks & Spencer Llandudno who were presented the award for Corporate Social Responsibility; Seibiant, a specialist tea and coffee shop in Conwy, who were named Green Business of the Year 2019; The Grape To Glass in Rhos on Sea who won Small Business of the Year and Alpine Travel were named Tourism Business of the Year.

Speaking about their win, Kate Roberts who owns Sheldon's along with her husband Julian and long-standing friends Lorna Hughes and husband Jonathan, said: "We are so delighted to have won this award and would like to thank our hard working staff, suppliers and customers for supporting us over the last few months.

"We are passionate about providing quality food, drink and customer service in Colwyn Bay, a town that is definitely becoming a great night out."

Judges praised the business for their "innovation" with their product offer and demonstrating impressive growth plans and good marketing initiatives together with community involvement.

Sheldon’s was previously a long established stationers.

Originally, the premises was used as a print works called Tompkinsons. When the friends started renovating the build, they discovered three eight-metre square windows that had been boarded up for the last 50 years.

Based on this, they decided to change the project renovation from a modern bar to a combination of modern bar on one side and a throwback to the history of the building on the other side.

Sheldon's serves wines, cocktails, craft beers, real ales, soft drinks and food.

Other businesses gaining recognition at the awards included Worldspan Plc, named Business of the Year 2019; Limb- Art who won New Business of the Year 2019 and Innovation Business of the Year; FreeGames.org who were named IT/Digital Business of the Year; Melanie Davis was named Apprentice of the Year; Canine & Co who were presented the award for Best Customer Focus and Tan Y Ddraig, a ceramic café in Conwy, were presented with outstanding employee of the Year.

Business Leader of the Year was Cheryl Williams of Colwyn BID.

A total of 300 guests attended the event at Venue Cymru.

Entertainment performances were from band The Quaynotes and Conwy County Borough Council choir. A raffle raised funds for local Charity Hope House.
