A 14 YEAR old Deganwy boy organised a sponsored run between Llandudno and Colwyn Bay piers for cancer research charities, after he heard his mother had breast cancer.
He also set up a social media crowd funding page. Initially this raised more than £1,000, but this has increased to greater than £1,500 following the run, and more is expected to come in from the sponsorship the youngsters arranged themselves for the race last Saturday, July 6.
His mother, Mrs Nicola Jones, said: “In 2016 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, but unbeknown to me my eldest son Owen set up a JustGiving page on Facebook to raise funds for cancer research. Throughout he has been supported by his 11 year old brother Harry.”
“Owen also arranged with his friends to run the 10 kilometres between Llandudno pier and Colwyn Bay pier to raise more money for cancer research.
She added: “In total 26 youngsters, boys and girls ran between Llandudno and Colwyn Bay piers. They were all friends of Owen, either from his current school, Ysgol Eirias, his former school, Ysgol Deganwy and Llandudno football academy. I was so surprised and very pleased when so many of them turned up.
“They all ran the distance, and already on line the amount of money raised has increased to more than £1,500, and we are waiting for all the runners’ sponsorship money which has yet to come in.
“I am extremely proud of every single boy and girl who took part, they didn’t have to do it, but they did. A lot of bad thigs are said about young people these days, but this initiative and commitment shows what real qualities some of them have.
She added: “I was really touched when I discovered what Owen had done entirely on his own initiative. I think he was so moved and he did it to give himself something to focus on and to work towards, and as a way of coping.”
