JAPANESE pupils have continued to build links with Conwy through origami and fish and chips.

As the town continues in its process of twinning Conwy Castle with the Japanese town of Himeji , schoolchildren from the Alethia Shonan High School, in the Kanagawa prefecture, spent two days with Year 10 pupils at Ysgol Aberconwy.

The pupils, who are in North Wales for the the Institute of Japanese Studies – Trinity Foundation Programme in Bangor and are the first to visit Aberconwy, gave presentations on their culture and a demonstration of origami at the school.

On the second day pupils from both schools took a trip to Conwy, where they visited the Guildhall and were greeted by the Mayor of Conwy, cllr Goronwy Edwards before sampling some bara brith and Welsh cakes. They were also introduced to the traditional costumes of the tow by former councillor Liz Hughes.

This was followed by the Welsh students giving their visitors a tour of Conwy Castle, lunch at Archway Fish Chip Shop and finally a tour of Plas Mawr Elizabethan House.

Kumi Sunada, director of the Institute of Japanese Studies, said: "Thank you the former Mayor, Bill Chapman, the staff of the Guildhall, the Mayor of Conwy, Goronwy Edwards, and Mr Ian Gerrard and Mrs Ann Bradshaw of Ysgol Aberconwy for all their help with organising this trip and the wonderful hospitality given by all involved.
