A GROUP of friends will attempt to swim six miles around the Great Orme to raise £10,000 for charity.

Gary Jones, Peter Aldous, Dimtri Pitton, Carlo Galeotti, Alex Aldous and Tomas Aldous, who met through met through a fitness class at Llandudno Swimming Centre, will attempt to swim the full distance on Friday, August 23, to raise money for Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer Now and the Llandudno Lions Club. [The date of the swim may change and is dependant on the weather].

Father and son Owain Davies and Gruff Davies, 12, and brothers Dylan and Iwan Griffiths will swim as part of a relay of swimmers that will swim alongside the full distance swimmers.

Gary Jones, who works at Grwp Llandrillo Menai, said: “During the swim we will encounter strong tides, currents and all the marine life Llandudno coastline has to offer.

“We are a close group of friends, all swimmers with family members who have been affected by cancer over the past two years. We have seen the devastating effects that both the cancer and its treatments can have on loved ones lives.

“The Llandudno Lions Club - our third charity - have been pivotal in supporting men in the early diagnosis of Prostate cancer in the area and were responsible for the early detection of Pete Aldous cancer in the summer of 2017.

“The funds for the Lions Club will go towards a Prostate Cancer screening session.”

Gary added: “Training is going really well. We have done some pool based training and we were in Llyn Padarn the other day and we are regulars on North Shore beach. “I am excited and both nervous about the challenge, but hopeful. We are hopeful we can get round safely.”

The swimmers will start on the Llandudno Promenade and swim around the Great Orme to West Shore Beach.

Events have been planned to support the fundraising including coffee mornings, in Llanrwst and Llandudno, and a Great Orme Swim raffle. On the morning of the swim, fundraisers will be on the prom from 11am.

Gary said: “Swimmers have been training hard, four to five times a week for the past four months in preparation for the swim.

“We are overwhelmed how people have been supporting us and the support from individual businesses.“During training we have all been stung regularly by jelly fish and even swam alongside some of Llandudno’s friendly seals.”
