A BUILDING society is set to relocate to a new branch in Wrexham town centre.

Nationwide is planning to move from its longstanding base on the High Street to take up two empty shops on Regent Street.

The units were most recently occupied by Yeomans Outdoor Leisure and Clarks Shoes.

The proposals were revealed after an application was lodged with Wrexham Council to make changes to the front of the properties.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the firm said the move would deliver improvements for customers.

They said: “We’re committed to serving our members in Wrexham and are pleased to confirm that work is underway for a brand new Nationwide Building Society branch on Regent Street.

“We’ll be relocating everyone from our current branch on the High Street to a bigger, better site and we’ll keep our members updated as these exciting plans develop.”

Earlier this year, Nationwide made a pledge to retain its current network of branches for at least two years.

It said it would retain a premises in any town or city where it currently has a site until May 2021.

It comes despite some banks choosing to cut their number of locations.

An application was submitted earlier this year to change the use of the two empty shops to provide financial services, although the identity of the future occupant was not made clear.

The most recent proposals will be considered by Wrexham Council at a later date.
