A CAMPAIGN to tackle traffic grid lock in Llanrwst has taken a step forward.

The town, which sits on the A470 road which runs from North to South Wales, suffers congestion.

A spokesman for the town council said: “We frequently have grid lock in the town and plan to get something done about it. We undertook a comprehensive review of traffic in the town in 2017 and the report from this we circulated to Conwy County Borough Council, the Welsh Government and North Wales Police.

“We invited Ken Skates AM, the Welsh Government’s Minister for the economy and transport to come and talk to the town council about this, but he declined.”

Janet Finch-Saunders AM for Aberconwy said: “There is a serious highway headache in Llanrwst. The historic streets are narrow, lorries mount pavements, and large vehicles encounter serious difficulties on the tight corners.

“The volume of traffic seems to be increasing along the A470, the main road between North and South Wales, and that we are set to see more vehicles as a result of the area’s increasing popularity with tourists, it is time for action.”

She added she was already trying to deal with one element of the problem. She said: “I have already started a campaign to see one part of the traffic trouble targeted, this is to reduce the problems caused by Pont Fawr.

“My work is paying off as Conwy council has developed proposals for new signage and road markings, and I am pushing the Welsh Government to stop flashing red at any request to introduce traffic lights on the A470.

“From the outset, I have been clear residents must have a say on the suggested solutions for the bridge and highway headaches of Llanrwst before any changes are implemented, so I do intent to consult the community soon”.
