HUNDREDS of people headed out to a much-loved park for decades and even centuries-old traditions before the winter weather is ushered in.

Families gathered at Cae Ddol Park in Ruthin for the annual Donkey Derby which featured a duck race along the River Clwyd and even an appearance from Punch and Judy – the traditional puppet show that originates in the 17th century – performed by Mr Bimbamboozle.

The highlights of the afternoon on Saturday, September 14 were children’s rides and a race on the long-eared donkeys, which have served human societies as a working animal for thousands of years.

There was also other entertainment for families including a bouncy castle and have-a-go archery, as well as ‘splat the rat’, coconut shy and a vintage car show

Refreshments were provided in the form of ice cream on a cone from Chilly Cow, of Ruthin, as well as tea and cakes under the tent and a burger van.

Blood Bikes Wales, the motorcycle service which couriers urgent and emergency medical items including blood and donor organs to hospitals in North Wales, were also present for a meet-and-greet.

Peter Jones, president of Ruthin Rotary Club, said: “Ruthin Rotary were very pleased to provide this day to thank the people of Ruthin who support us throughout the year and for the very generous donations of local businesses and the Town Council, without whose support the Donkey Derby could not take place.”
