Tales of Welsh rugby heroics and life in mining communities will top the bill at a special Rugby World Cup Gala Dinner at a Deganwy Hotel in October as one of the nation’s favourite son’s heads to North Wales.

Max Boyce will take to the stage at the luxurious 4-star Quay Hotel and Spa on Wednesday, October 23, just days before this year’s Rugby World Cup semi-finals, for an intimate and exclusive black tie charity dinner in support of Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospice.

The Welsh comedian, singer and all round entertainer rose to fame four decades ago thanks to a hilarious act combining stories and songs from the South Wales mining community in which he grew up alongside his lifelong passion for rugby union.

Now in his 70s he’s still resident in Glynneath in the South Wales valleys where he has lived all his life.

Boyce’s passion for Welsh rugby has not diminished and is reflected in many of the songs he has written and included on the more than two million albums he’s sold worldwide.

One of his greatest successes of recent years coincided with the 2003 Ruby World Cup hosted by Australia.

After performing in concerts in Adelaide and Melbourne he took to the stage at a sold out Sydney Opera House for a performance that was later released on the DVD, Max Boyce: Down Under.

Boyce, who is President of Glynneath Rugby Club, says he always enjoys performing in North Wales and he’s looking forward to what will be an intimate show to a capacity of 180 guests.

He said: “Performing in big venues such as the Millennium Stadium at the opening ceremony of the 1999 Rugby World Cup or the Sydney Opera House are very different. The evening at the Quay Hotel and Spa, Deganwy is much more intimate and allows me to get ‘up close and personal’ with the audience.

“Let’s hope we will be celebrating a successful World Cup and looking forward to Wales being in the semi-final on their way to being crowned World Cup winners.”

“And we shouldn’t forget this gala dinner and show is all about raising funds for Ty Gobaith a children’s hospice, a wonderful charity that is involved with so much amazing work in the communities it serves.”

Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospice area fundraiser Beverley Bradley says this is a fantastic opportunity to get up close and personal to one of Wales’ greatest entertainers.

She said: “It’s going to be a fantastic event and we are delighted to have been chosen as the charity partner for what will be a magical evening of entertainment. The evening will commence at 7.30pm and will include a sumptuous two-course dinner, charitable raffle and auction.

“It’s going to be an evening full of laughter and in the presence of a true iconic Welsh legend and coming just before the Rugby World Cup semi finals it’s going to be a tremendous unforgettable evening.”

She added: “The money raised through this charity evening will certainly help Ty Gobaith continue to provide the services to families at a time when they need us most.

“Sadly, every week, three local families face their biggest fear and their child dies. Hope House Children’s Hospices, which includes Ty Gobaith, cannot stop children dying but we can stop families suffering on their own.

“When they are facing the most devastating loss of their lives we must be there. We need to reach every child, mum, dad, sister and brother and to do this we need to raise more money so we can offer even more services.

“We need to raise in excess of £6m a year to support all the children and families we help from across North Wales, Shropshire and parts of Cheshire.

“That’s why it’s so important we have as much help as possible from communities and businesses across the region.”
