A “HARD-WORKING farmer” and “loving father” took his own life after a long period of mental illness, an inquest has heard.

Evan Glyndwr Hughes, 61, died on April 19, 2019 on his farm, Caerlloi, Foel, near Llanfair Caereinion, following a battle with bipolar disorder.

The inquest, held at Welshpool Magistrates’ Court, heard that the father of four was discovered on the farm by his daughter.

Assistant coroner Ian Boyes read evidence from Mr Hughes’ daughter which said she attempted CPR until police and air ambulance paramedics arrived but was unable to revive him.

“I knew in my heart that he was dead,” she said.

She described Mr Hughes as a “hard-working farmer and a loving father” who struggled with “constant cycles of ups and downs”.

In a statement, Mr Hughes’ carer said she visited the farm daily to ensure he was taking his medication. She said Mr Hughes was “feeling upbeat” on the day he died although he was “still worrying about things”.

She described Mr Hughes as a “lovely, kind person” and that his death was “terribly sad”.

Recording a verdict of ‘suicide’, the coroner said: “It would seem the difficulties became too much for him. He suffered mental health problems for a number of years, receiving treatment for bipolar and other conditions.

“Sadly, he took his own life at his own farm, by his own hand.”

The coroner offered his condolences to Mr Hughes’ family, describing what happened as a “very sad loss”.
