AN APPEAL has been launched for volunteers and funds to set up a corps of drums for formal occasions in Colwyn Bay.

Paul Jones, aged 52, who served as a drum major in the Royal Welch Fusiliers for 23 years, plans to set up a corps of drums for the town and has already approached the town council for support.

Paul, who now works as a Welsh government traffic officer, said: “After attending numerous Remembrance parades over the years, I have come to the conclusion there is an excellent opportunity to produce something the local community can be proud of. It would perform at any number of formal events in addition to the Remembrance parade.

“I have approached Colwyn Bay town council with the proposal of forming a corps of drums in the town and I’ve had very positive feedback from them about seeking a grant for instruments, equipment, uniform and training aids.

“In addition I would like to ask local businesses to help with sponsorship, they could even use it for corporate events.”

Paul added: “The corps of drums would form up in the New Year once a suitable number of volunteers has come forward and I’ve found a local venue for weekly practice evenings.

Neil Bastow, Mayor of Colwyn Bay said: “This is a very good idea. We were very lucky to get a band for the Remembrance parade, but we could only find one which came from Liverpool. It would be so much better if we had one here in Colwyn Bay.”
