THE festive period will come early for families in the Vale of Clwyd when a town stages a ‘magical’ winter sport for the first time.

While parts of Denbighshire were shocked to see snow in early November last week, another unexpected turn of events will bring ice-skating to the county. The Clwyd 2020 fundraising committee for the Royal Welsh Show will wheel an ice-skating rink into Ruthin for the first time in the town’s history.

The Christmas Fair and Skating Rink at the Ruthin Farmers’ Market will also feature a festive market of locally produced food and drink and a demonstration of remote-controlled toy-sized vehicles.

The ice rink can hold up to 50 people at a time with 30-minute slots available for adults and children to put on a pair of skates.

More merry highlights include a demonstration of remote-controlled toy vehicles by the Vale Scale Model Club and an appearance from Father Christmas. Schools will also take part with carol singing and a ‘decorate the animal pen’ competition in the auction area.

Gwyn Edwards, chair of Clwyd 2020, said the committee’s fundraising on behalf of the Vale of Clwyd, chosen as the feature county of the RSW next year, is “going well” thanks to “a great community spirit” in Ruthin.

“We are very excited to be bringing a skating rink to Ruthin and offering a great value family day out,” he said.

Ruthin county councillor Huw Hilditch-Roberts said the event is “fantastic news” for families in the town and surrounding areas.

“Residents don’t need to go out of Denbighshire for a magical ice experience as now they will have it on their doorstep. It is also great news for the economy and will hopefully attract people to Ruthin.”

Anne Roberts, chair of the Ruthin & District Civic Association, said she has “no doubt” the fair will be a special event for families in the town, adding: “I think it will be great for families, adding to the Christmas atmosphere. It will prove to be really popular."

Booking is advised for the ice rink at £8 for adults and £5 for children. The fair is free to enter.
