RHYL and District had plenty to celebrate after their 24-12 derby win at Abergele saw them move back to the Specsavers National League Division Two North summit.

The Dragons’ concluded a very positive 2019 with their third victory of the campaign against Gele, and they received further good news after Colwyn Bays secured a surprise success over title rivals Mold.

This leaves Jimmy Waring’s men four points clear in their quest for promotion to the top-flight, which would get another huge boost should they emerge from their home clash against Welshpool on Saturday with another notable triumph.

The home side dominated from the off at Pentre Mawr Park and went ahead early on thanks to a brilliant individual score from James Fisher-Jones that was converted by Richie Williams.

Things looked even more promising for the visitors immediately following the restart when Reeve Wright extended their advantage with a well-worked try after another period of sustained pressure, but Gele kept plugging away and managed to touch down for a score of their own after a quickly taken penalty.

Any hopes the home side had of getting back into the contest were quickly dashed when Jason Blackmore restored the Dragons’ comfortable cushion, and a sensational individual try from long-range courtesy of Will Morris secured their bonus point just before the break.

After the break saw the hosts restrict their title-chasing opponents to fewer opportunities during a hugely improved second half, and they were rewarded with a penalty try that proved to be the only score of the period.

The game was brought to an abrupt halt late on when Gele’s standout prop Dewi Roberts suffered a serious head injury.

A club statement, read: “Everyone at the club send best wishes to prop Dewi Roberts who suffered a serious head injury.

“Sincere thanks to all that helped out, in particular Rhyl player Ben Jones (and doctor), our physio Alex Wharton and Bo Hanyane for their outstanding efforts. Brysia wella Dew.”
