THE only post office in the walled town of Conwy will close at the end of the month.

Following the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use, the branch - on Lancaster Square - is to close at 5.30pm on Friday, January 31.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said the closure is 'temporary'.

Options to reinstate a Post Office service are currently being explored.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "Following the resignation of the postmaster and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use Conwy Post Office will temporarily close. We know how important Post Office services are to people in Conwy and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.

North Wales Pioneer:

Cllr Aaron Wynne

"Unfortunately, from time to time, Post Office branches do temporarily close for reasons beyond our control.

"The majority of our branches are run by independent retailers, meaning we are not the owners of the premises and regrettably, we are often unable to immediately reopen the branch ourselves."

Cllr Aaron Wynne, Conwy county councillor and and Plaid Cymru candidate for Aberconwy, said: “I’m concerned to hear of the temporary closure of Conwy’s Post Office.

"Although it is said to be temporary, this does raise alarm bells considering the national trends of closures.

"Now that Conwy has not got a single bank, the Post Office has played a more significant role in the community.

"The Post Office is a vital asset in the town of Conwy, and I will join residents in campaigning to keep this service if the closure sets to become long-term."

Following the closure, any customers wishing to access Post Office services may do so from:

  • Conway Road Post Office, 169 Conway Road, Llandudnno Junction, Conwy, LL31 9EGX
  • West Shore Post Office, 26 Great Ormes Road, Llandudno, Conwy, LL30 2BWX

The spokesperson added: "We would like to assure customers that we are currently investigating the options available which will enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community.

"We would encourage any retailer or small business owner interested in running the Post Office and incorporating it into their business to contact us."
