A 41-year-old man who was drink-driving for the fifth time had driven at 90mph through Abergele then crashed at nearby Llanddulas, as he fled police, a court heard..

Lee Sumner, of Rosebery Avenue, Llandudno, who’d reached 106mph in a Mazda and turned off his headlights to try to escape, was jailed for twelve months.

A 42 months driving ban with an extended test was imposed at Caernarfon crown court. He admitted dangerous driving while just over the alcohol limit.

Prosecutor James Coutts said the police officer found Sumner slumped to the side of the upturned and heavily damaged car. The defendant told police he had been “brain-dead.”

Sion ap Mihangel, defending, said Sumner had panicked when he saw police and reacted in an inappropriate manner for three-and-a-half miles.

Only the defendant was injured.

Judge Huw Rees told the defendant :”You could have killed yourself and you could have killed other people as well.”

He’d driven while banned on seven occasions, the judge noted.
