AN IMPROVEMENT plan has been set in motion to enhance the performance of Ysgol Awel y Mynydd in Llandudno Junction.

The school has been rated red, the lowest category in the Welsh Government’s four-colour traffic light system, formally known as the National School Categorisation System. It is the only school in Conwy county to be graded red. As a result, the primary school will receive up to 25 days of support to improve its performance.

A spokesperson for Conwy Council said it was “working closely with the school to ensure sustained improvements are made to teaching and learning, leadership and curriculum planning”.

The spokesperson added: “A detailed improvement plan will be implemented by the school, with intensive support from the local authority and the regional consortia.”

The regional consortia, one of four in Wales, is the school effectiveness and improvement service for North Wales, which works with local authorities to develop excellent schools, and d develop a world class system of education where every pupil within the region will be able to access consistently high quality teaching

Support work for the school has already started. Conwy council and the regional consortia will continuously monitor and support the school. Estyn, the Welsh school’s watchdog, will also monitor the school on a regular basis.

The spokesperson added: “The school has recently shown progress in a number of areas and with continued support, the school is expected to improve within an acceptable time frame.”

The school categorisation system aims to raise the standard of education in Wales and support all schools to continue to improve.

It classifies schools by colour and this shows the level of support a school needs, with the schools in the green category needing the least support and those in the red category needing the most intensive support. The other categories are amber and yellow. Overall, 17 schools in the county were given a green status, the top category, with 11 were at amber, 29 yellow and Ysgol Awel y Mynydd was the only school marked red.
