COMMUNITY leaders are calling on the public to have their say on what should be done with a phone box.

At a meeting of Llay Community Council on Wednesday, councillors discussed the future of a phone box on the Straight Mile on the border of the village.

Chairman Cllr Brian Apsley told the Leader afterwards that the box had been bought by the community council some time ago.

"We did have a phone box in First Avenue but that was taken away," he explained.

"So the one we're looking at now is on the Straight Mile.

"We did talk about having a defibrillator in there, but now we have two defibrillators - one in the Welfare and another in the Legion.

"There's another due to be put in the Crown too, so we're well covered.

"The Straight Mile phone box has been put on the agenda for the next community council meeting because we have to decide if we still want it - and if we do, what to do with it.

"We've asked councillors to speak to [residents] and see what they think.

"Some communities have them as places to keep maps of the village and with recommendations of where to visit, but there's always concerns these things will get damaged."

The Leader reported on the community council's discussions about the First Avenue phone box in recent years.

Councillors had heard from Cadwyn Clwyd about a scheme to refit five phone boxes across Wrexham as assets for the community - with ideas from previous schemes being defibrillator stations, bicycle puncture repair stations, first aid stores, visitor information kiosks and more.

But before the scheme could get off the ground the box was removed by BT, to the disappointment of community councillors.

Cllr Apsley has invited members of the public to have their say on what they think should be done with the Straight Mile phone box by emailing the community council at: Clerk@llaycommunitycouncil.co.uk
