AN APPEAL for a council tax holiday for flood victims has been made by a member of Conwy council.

Cllr Aaron Wynne, a ward member for Llanrwst has made the call. This would mean that people affected by the floods would not have to pay council tax for up to six months. He said: “It is within Conwy council's power to offer residents concessions on council tax. This is sometimes done with residents who are in arrears. Many residents need financial assistance on top of the £500 given to affected households by the Welsh government, as many were unable to afford insurance for their properties and are facing bills of many thousands of pounds. Cllr Wynne said: "It will costs residents thousands of pounds to replace the goods inside homes, from carpets to kitchens and everything in between. However I hope the council could give additional help to residents and could look at considering options such as giving flood victims a council tax holiday.

"The personal clean-up for residents will costs thousands of pounds. Money most people just don’t have."

A spokesperson for Conwy County Borough Council said: "Anyone whose property has been flooded and which is uninhabitable should contact the council tax department for help with applying for exemptions from council tax. Businesses affected by flooding should also contact the Council about exemptions from Business Rates.

"The council arranged drop in sessions in Llanrwst to help residents apply for the Welsh Government’s Discretionary Assistance Fund for flood victims."
