As the world goes into lockdown, older people are facing an extended period of isolation.

The coronavirus poses a particular threat to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, and as the situation grew increasingly serious this week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson advised all over-70s to spend 12 weeks in isolation to keep away from the virus.

For many that presents particular challenges, and as this picture shows, it leaves some people separated from their loved ones by a pane of glass.

This is Diane Hobbins, who is from Leighton but is self-isolating in Solihull in the West Midlands, and who found a way to see her beloved granddaughter Frankie, while still following the government’s official advice.

The government’s guidance is that everyone should work from home if they can, and avoid gathering in crowded places such as pubs or theatres.

Those with the most serious health conditions – including people who are pregnant or aged over 70 – should self-isolate to avoid catching the virus, and all “unnecessary” visits to older people in care homes should cease.
