ABOUT 60 people are being made redundant from a Llandudno research centre.

Due to the pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic, global Geoscience firm CGG Robertson has begun the consultation process for axing jobs at its facility in Llanrhos.

According to representatives from Unite - the UK’s largest trade union - jobs affected include highly skilled scientists and technicians.

The job losses have been described as a ‘devastating blow’ for workers and the area.

Daryl Williams, Unite regional officer, said: “This news is a devastating blow for North West Wales which is already suffering badly from the collapse in the leisure and tourism sector as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic.”

The oil and gas consultancy company is citing the fall in global oil prices as an underlying cause behind their decision.

Chris Page, CGG Robertson managing director, said: “In response to the current downturn in the oil and gas industry we have presented a proposal to reduce approximately 60 roles within our organisation. In these challenging market conditions we believe this difficult decision will enable us to maintain a viable business through the downturn and ensure the sustainability of our operation in North Wales.”

Following the decision on Tuesday, June 9, crude oil prices continued to drop as markets opened this week, as reported in national media, due to fears of a second wave of Covid-19 infections.

Mr Williams added: “These jobs are highly skilled and not easily replaced. We are calling upon CGG Robertson to think again and engage with Unite to try and navigate a way through the current crisis, whilst keeping their loyal workforce intact.

“Unite will be offering every support possible to our members during this worrying and difficult time.”
