BUCKLEY residents are being encouraged to celebrate the town's forthcoming Jubilee, despite the main event not going ahead due to coronavirus precautions.

This year Buckley Jubilee, which is celebrating its 164th year, will not take its usual format.

But committee member Hazel Ashton said there are still ways residents can mark the occasion safely.

She said: "We cannot ask people to congregate on the Common and we will not be able to process, behind Royal Buckley Town Band, along the familiar route or gather at the side of the roads to witness the event.

"The funfair will not be arriving, but we did not want to let the day go unnoticed."

On the afternoon on July 14, a short service led by the Reverend Martin Batchelor will be available to view online.

Mrs Ashton continued: "During the lockdown many people have been enjoying walking and cycling with families. "In Jubilee week (July 12 to 19), take the opportunity to have your own Jubilee walk.

"Several places of worship will be displaying photos and pictures of previous Jubilees on their railings, notice boards and walls. "Call by one or more on your route - socially distancing, of course.

"We can decorate our own windows and gardens with bunting and lots of people will be planning their traditional 'Jubilee tea'.

"Hopefully, the weather will allow us to sit outside and enjoy the company of some of out families and neighbours.

"Please don't forget those who may still be isolating,"

Residents are encouraged to take photos to record the celebration of Buckley Jubilee 2020.

Councillor Dennis Hutchinson said following a meeting this week it had been agreed that bunting will be put up around the town, to commemorate both the Jubilee and the reopening of several of Buckley's shops.

He said: "I suggested it would be a good idea to incorporate the town centre in recognition that it is now open for business and we thought it would be a nice thing to do for the community."

The details of Rev Batchelor's service are to be confirmed closer to the day.
